The How to Guide for Deer Encounters

During a trip to Japan last year, I spent some time observing interactions between humans and deer in Nara Park where Sika deer roam freely. In particular, I observed the behaviour of tourists. This illustrated zine, informed by guidance from Nara Park, presents, in a satirical manner, the most common mistakes I observed from tourists. It also offers some ‘top tips’ for more appropriate behaviour towards the deer.

The central question of the zine, ‘Would I do this to a human’, encourages the reader to question if their actions towards the sika deer demonstrate the same care and respect they would give to a human
